The note is a clear nod to Denmark’s long, dark winters, where residents experience just an hour of sunlight a day, compared to California's 300 days of sunshine each year.

The petition has gained traction with supporters listed as “Sven the Viking,” “Karen from accounting,playphp” and Lars Ulrich, the Danish drummer and founding member of Metallica. The petition’s whimsical tone continues with the goal of raising $1 trillion in crowdfunding—“give or take a few billion”—to back the hypothetical transaction.

Launched on the website denmarkification.com, the petition sets a target of 500,000 signatures. Despite its playful nature, the campaign includes a disclaimer at the bottom: “This campaign is 100% real… in our dreams.” Denmark's Foreign Affairs Ministry and California Governor Gavin Newsom's office have yet to comment on the petition.

US Buying Greenland

The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland is not new; the United States has considered buying the territory twice in history—first in 1867 and again in 1946, when President Harry S. Truman proposed purchasing the island for $100 million.
